His nickname, Downhill, he got from riding mountain bike fast downhill. He uses it on the Net as well, exchanging the 'o' for an '0', making it d0wnhill.
Downhill strikes me as being future oriented. Not a hacker, rather one of those people embracing the new, the minute it steps through the doorway. He has some essays about cyber culture on his homepage, Performing Arts in the Digital Age and Man- Machine Cyberculture. His writing has also appeared at cyberpunk.de, but he doesn’t consider himself a cyberpunk.
"I’m a post-modern-punk that likes the term cyberpunk."

What about the project you were working on with Bruce Sterling?
"Well, I'm not really working with him. But I'm on his Dead-media mailing list, which is all about electronic devices that existed for all kinds of data storage and communication, but which are not in use these days. There are some pretty weird devices that people built. He's collecting all that stuff to write his next book about it."
Downhill isn't sure of exactly who's on the list; Bruce is the editor and he chooses who's on and who's not. Basically, whenever you have some interesting information you mail it to the list.
So when is the book being published?
"He told me he's working on it the occasional five minutes when he has time. No idea when it will be finished. Well, it's Mr. Sterling... who knows."
