Castle

Today I saw nobody at all.
The radio went from jazz to news
to static, all synthetic, freeze-
dried, just add air. Birds
were hungry past the window.
I was fat inside
with empty fingers.
The cat slept sitting up
in her ionic cloud,
the dogs curled into dustballs
in the corners.
I was master of all this
as I have been every day
before. All day nobody and then
nobody knocked at the door.
But I won’t open, no
I won’t.
